Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
